SUMMARY:Tiantai ?One-Practice Samadhi? as a precursor to Zen meditation
DESCRIPTION:Monday evening Dharma talk by Brook Ziporyn\, June 29 Brook Ziporyn will discuss the "One-Practice Samadhi" as presented in the Mohe zhi guan\, by Zhiyi\, great sixth century founder of Chinese Tiantai Buddhism. This is a complete ritual\, visualization\, and contemplative format that contrasts with the "Samadhi of Following One's Own Mentations" in the same text. These will be compared to each other and to some later developments in Chan/ Zen\, like the fourth ancestor Daoxin's version of the One-Practice Samadhi in the Dunhuang cave materials. Brook Ziporyn is a scholar of ancient and medieval Chinese religion and philosophy\, expositor and translator of some of the most complex philosophical texts and concepts of the Chinese religious traditions. Dr. Ziporyn is a professor at the University of Chicago Divinity School\, and has previously taught at Northwestern and Harvard University. His books include Being and Ambiguity: Philosophical Experiments With Tiantai Buddhism\; and Beyond Oneness and Difference: Li and Coherence in Chinese Buddhist Thought and its Antecedents. He is currently working on a cross-cultural inquiry into the themes of death\, time\, and perception\, tentatively entitled Against Being Here Now. Monday\, June 29\, 7:45 pm\, following 7:15 Zazen Part of regular Ancient Dragon Zen Gate program. All are welcome www.ancientdragon.org
