Ayurveda is based on a five elemental system. The five elements, or building blocks: earth, water, fire, air and ether, make up the entire universe. Accordingly, the human being is a small model of the universe. What happens in the human body exists in altered form in the universal body. Their properties are important in understanding balances and imbalances in the human body. They influence one’s mental tendencies, likes and dislikes, physical strengths and weaknesses.
