Monday evening Dharma talk by Dale Wright, June 22 This talk will provide an overview of the Buddhist teachings on karma along with an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of that idea as traditionally articulated. The focus on this assessment will be on "collective karma," the idea that not just individuals but whole communities and even nations generate karma that shapes their future possibilities. The talk will conclude with reflections on the relationship between the quest for social justice and the quest for enlightenment. Dale Wright has taught Buddhist and Asian philosophy and religion at Occidental College in Los Angeles for thirty years. He is author of The Six Perfections: Buddhism and the Cultivation of Character, Philosophical Meditations on Zen Buddhism, and co-editor of a series of books on the history of Zen.
